Dave Chawner- Mental
Counting House
Four Stars
Reviewer: Mark Ritchie
I have seen and laughed along with Mr Chawner before, so going back to hear if he has anything new to say proved to be the right decision for me.
His cosy and almost conspiratorial method of imparting the set-up lines, results almost invariably in laughter at some of the outlandish dilemmas we all face almost daily.
Dave Chawner uses observational comedy on how so many of life’s glitches can impact out mental health. All of which lead to well-aimed pay off and punchline bits.
More than anything this performer comes across as a thoroughly nice guy, who would probably be a great psychiatrist, if ever he decides on a career change. I intend to track down a copy of a certain book, penned by Mr Chawner, who is a successful author and mental health advocate. Within the pages of my own autobiography, I refer to many aspects of mental health battles. Mine: The wrong approach, at first involved excoriation and battling with what lay beneath. His: The correct approach, involved him finding wit and humour to go with the standard-bearer approach he takes to overcoming demons.
If all the above does not sound amusing and you consider this arid ground for comedy, you really should go and see him. Dave Chawner has funny bones and his cleverly linked material puts a lot of things in perspective, bringing smiles and laughs inside the thorny subject of wrestling with the feared big black dog.
